Walters racing all started when Doug purchased a 1964
Pontiac Lemans stock car and started racing in 1975 on
a small dirt track in Seletz, Oregon. Before long Doug
started competing at Willamette Speedway, a dirt track
located in the small town of Lebanon, Oregon. This track
is well known for drawing some 100 drivers from all over
the Northwest every Saturday night, the competition is
fierce providing both drivers and fans with some of the
best racing within the country.
For several years in the late 70s and throughout the 80s
Doug would compete at Portland Speedway on the asphalt
¼ mile track, then on Saturdays he would switch
out the springs, change the set up on his #67 bright red
racecar, then travel to Willamette Speedway to race on
the dirt.
His driving career would win him several main events at
both of these tracks and he would consistently finish
the year out being in the top 10 in driver championship
points.
In the mid 80's Doug was racing with better equipment
and would occasionally compete in a hand full of selected
high profile Nascar Winston West races, for a driver not
competing full time on the series he would always end
the race with a respectable finish.
At the end of the 1984 season Willamette Speedway presented
Doug with the "Sportsman driver of the year award"
in the Super Dirt Late Model division.
During the 1998 season he made the decision to slow down
and make his son Greg the teams primary driver, Greg was
already racing on a limited schedule, soon found himself
racing full time at Portland Speedway driving an asphalt
late model stockcar, he would race every Friday night
on the ½ mile against some of the best competition
in Nascars late model division. This would give the young
driver valuable experience racing at high speeds in the
tough competition of short track racing.
Greg's dad that same season purchased a dirt late model
for Greg to drive on Saturday nights at Willamette Speedway,
Greg was soon racing both at Portland Speedway on Friday
nights and at Willamette Speedway on Saturday night, just
as his dad had year's prior.
In 2003 Doug formed and promoted the Pacific Coast Dirt
Late Model Series, which competes at various racetracks
throughout Oregon, Washington and California.
Today Doug has about all of his time taken up with promoting
the series and Sunset Speedway located in Banks, Oregon.
Doug is constantly evaluating the future for both the
series and the track, working with the sponsors, track
personnel and coordinating on and off track activities.
