Pacific
Coast Fastrak DirtCar Series by Bill Poehler/ Saturday August 25,
2007 Sunset Speedway Park, Banks - Oregon.
Terry Ferrando tried for three years to win a late model race in vain.
He mused about how if he could win his first race more would follow.
The driver out of Salem, Oregon was right.
Ferrando went from the back of the B-Main event Saturday night at
Sunset Speedway Park to win that race then went from the back of the
67-lap T&G Thriller A-Main event to win the $3,000 top prize in
one of the richest dirt late model races ever held in the northwest.
The win was Ferrando's second in the Pacific Coast Fastrak DirtCar
Series this season. He also won the July 21 Jon Miller Memorial.
Defending series champion and points leader Greg Walters of Banks
placed second for a $1,500 prize followed by Jason Wines of Lebanon
placed third and got $1,000. Multi-team owner Jerry Schram of Vancouver,
Washington placed fourth for $750 and hired gun Jeremy Shank of Salem
rounded out the top five.
Ferrando set fast time around the tricky ¼-mile clay oval,
started on pole in the first heat race and led the first lap, but
just before the lap two caution for the spinning Malcolm Lindberg
of Monroe, Washington, Ferrando pulled his No. 12 car into the infield.
The crew found Ferrando's car had stripped a drive coupler from the
engine to the transmission and was forced to make repairs, but the
fastest car in the place would have to go to start at the back of
the B-Main event.
Outside polesitter Darvin Tramel of Aurora assumed the lead after
Ferrando broke and led until the white flag, but third-starting Shank
went by for the lead and the win when Tramel slipped high coming out
of turn two on the last lap. Tramel finished second with Branden Lindberg
in third and hired gun Mike Miller of Albany in fourth.
In the second heat, Walters took the lead from the pole, but outside
polesitter Eric Sayre of Vancouver kept right on Walters' bumper and
Sayre went by Walters on the last lap to take the win. Walters got
second with Robby Ireland of Banks in third and Steve Suckow of Hillsboro
in fifth.
In the third heat, Jason Wines of Lebanon took the lead from the pole
position on the start and won in front of second place Billy Workman
jr. of Canby, third place Schram and fourth place J.P. Pagel of Brightwood.
Ferrando would have been in the trophy dash, but he and his crew were
making repairs, which allowed Walters into the dash.
Wines took the lead of the dash from the pole position and Shank followed
him through from third to second on the start. Shank, the 2004 series
champion, got under Wines on the last lap to win the race. Shank rolled
a six on the dice of inversion after the dash, which put Workman on
pole position for the main event with Tramel on the outside of the
front row.
Outside polesitter Jason Johnson of Gresham took the lead of the B-Main
at the start, but after a pair of caution flags, Jeff Biffle of Vancouver,
older brother of NASCAR
Nextel Cup star, got by Johnson for the lead on the fourth lap. Ferrando,
who started last in 11th place, passed Biffle for the lead on the
sixth lap and checked out on the field. Biffle finished second with
Scott Puncochar of Hillsboro in third, Johnson in fourth and Kevin
"Pork Chop" Rodgers in the fifth and final transfer spot.
Workman got the jump on Tramel for the lead from the green flag. Walters
got along side Workman on lap eight and the pair battled before Walters
cleared Workman for the lead on lap 11, but a caution for Rogers ending
up in the turn four fence negated the pass. By the caution Ferrrando
had moved into seventh from his 13th starting spot.
On the restart, Walters sped past Workman down the backstretch and
Sayre followed suit. On the 15th lap, Sayre passed Walters to take
over the lead and four laps later, Ferrando went by Walters for second.
Following a succession of cautions, Ferrando finally found his way
by Sayre following a lap 45 restart. Shank got around Walters for
third and was battling with Sayre for second, but the pair spun on
lap 57 when Shank went low on Sayre coming into turn three. The cars
were locked together and the race was stopped briefly while the cars
were freed.
Ferrando pulled away at the finish for the win followed by Walters,
Wines, Schram and Shank made his way back up to fifth by the finish.
Workman finished sixth with Miller in seventh, Tramel in eighth, Sayre
in ninth and Robby Ireland of Banks soldiering on for with. Johnson
finished 11th with Biffle in 12th, Branden Lindberg in 13th, Suckow
in 14th, Puncochar in 15th, Pagel in 16th and Rogers DNFing in 17th.
The PCFDCS season concludes September 1 and 2 back at Sunset Speedway
Park.
