WINS BACK TO BACK: |
Pacific
Coast Fastrak DirtCar Series by Bill Poehler/ Saturday August 11,
2007 at Sunset Speedway- Banks, Oregon
- There were no doubts about the winner Saturday.
Hometown driver Greg Walters won his second A-Main event in the Pacific
Coast Fastrak DirtCar Series in two days Saturday, this time taking
the long way around the 1/4-mile oval to win the 50 lapper at Sunset
Speedway Park in Banks, and the fifth on the season for the series
points leader.
Outside pole sitter Scott Puncochar took the lead on the first lap
with pole sitting Steve Suckow following in second, Terry Ferrando
in third and Walters in fourth. Series newcomer Ian McHutchinson of
Kirkland, Wash., pulled off after the first lap after breaking a suspension
part.
On the second lap, the car of Jesse Freeman spun on the front stretch,
but was able to continue. A couple laps later, a car knocked one of
the tires on the inside of turn two and the caution flag again waved.
Two laps later the tire was knocked back out and the corner worker
left the tire out.
The charging Ferrando, winner of the series' previous stop at Banks,
got by Puncochar for the lead on lap 34 and Walters jumped forward
to third. The caution flew again two laps later as the cars of John
Ireland, Freeman and Jim Clair spun in turns one and two.
As the field went back to green flag racing, a major chain reaction
in turns one and two and Bob Trout, Robby Ireland and Mark Thompson
were involved. Thompson and Ireland were finished for the night with
heavy damage. Trout was able to continue.
On the restart, Walters got low under Puncochar and two laps later
was able to clear the former series winner. Trout spun a few laps
later and Clair was involved. Clair was black flagged for being involved
in three cautions.
On the restart, Walters made a daring move on the outside of Ferrando.
The two battled side by side for three laps before Walters took the
lead and pulled away for the win.
Walters won with Ferrando in second, Branden Lindberg moving up to
third from his fifth starting position, Suckow in fourth and Puncochar
in fifth. Jason Johson came in sixth and shared the Hard Charger Award
with Walters and Kevin "Pork Chop" Rodgers was seventh,
the last car on the lead lap. J.P. Pagel, who ran over 10 laps with
a flat left front tire, finished in eighth, one lap down, newcomer
Mike Graham of Battleground, Wash., was ninth two laps down followed
by Trout, John Ireland and Freeman. Clair was credited with 13th,
Thompson was 14th, Robby Ireland 156h and McHutchinson in 16th.
Ferrando set fast time for the second Sunset race in a row with a
lap of 14.484 seconds to beat out Robby Ireland's 14.582.Ferrando
won the first heat race by a full straight in front of Walters. Robby
Ireland won the second heat race from the pole. Walters led all four
laps from the outside pole in the trophy dash and the trophy girl
threw the dice to determine a six-car invert for the main event.
Walters leads the PCFDCS season standings with 826 points with Puncochar
in second with 752 followed by Suckow with 720, Lindberg in fourth
with 706 and Rodgers in fifth at 654.
The series' next race is Aug. 25, the 10th annual 67-lap T&G Thriller
back at Banks. That race will pay $3,000 to win and $200 to start
the A-Main. The season concludes at Sunset Sept. 1-2.
